We already know that texting while driving is a terrible idea, but Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood is questioning the growing trend of automakers expanding the technologies offered inside vehicles. During CES, Ford added to its tech stables with the introduction of the MyFord/MyLincoln systems that promise to take in-car technology to the next level–but are complex systems like that growing hazard on roads?

According to Secretary LaHood, they certainly are. LaHood stated: “Some of these car manufacturers are putting all these gadgets and bells and whistles that are going to distract people — and we’re trying to get gadgets and bells and whistles out of their hands and out of their ears.”

LaHood stopped short of expressing any intention of formally restricting manufacturers from including new, distracting technological components, instead stating that he would speak with manufacturers about it. [via Detroit News]
