Floor mats are a rather dubious addition to many a car, and in the case of a number of Toyotas they’re downright dangerous. The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration has issued a safety alert to owners of the following Lexus and Toyota models: 2007 – 2010 Camry, 2005- 2010 Avalon, 2004-2009 Prius, 2005-2010 Tacoma, 2007-2010 Tundra, the 2007-2010 ES 350, and the 2006-2010 IS250 and IS350. The safety issue concerns complaints that the floor mats interfere with the accelerator pedal and cause it to get stuck in the fully open position, resulting in unintended and hazardous acceleration. Toyota will be issuing a recall of the 3.8 million vehicles affected–it’s largest U.S. recall ever–when it devises a proper solution. In the meantime, the NHTSA and Toyota are strongly recommending that driversĀ  remove the mats and not replace them with any others. [via AutoBlog]
