According to an article in the Detroit Free Press, 2009 saw a total of 15.2 million vehicles recalled–a huge jump from last year’s 8.6 million. Not that surprisingly, given its high profile accelerator-based recall, Toyota was the single-company leader with 4.87 million vehicles recalled. That’s one year-end distinction that the automaker was undoubtedly hoping to avoid. This was the first time Toyota took the top spot in recalls.

Not too far behind, Ford recalled 4.52 million vehicles, relating primarily to cruise control issues. Unfortunately for Ford, without the cruise control recalls, it would have had a record low of just under 22,000 recalls. GM took the third spot with 2.24 million. [Detroit Free Press via AutoBlog]
