AMV-R Supercar Design Study

Take a look at what could be the future of automotive design when today’s generation of bright-eyed design students steps across the line and begins running things. The AMV-R (Automotive Visual Racing)–yeah, name needs work–is a design by Alexei Mikhailov, a student at the Humber College Institute of Technology & Advanced Learning in Toronto.

It’s a little too derivative of the Ferrari Enzo, if you ask me–not that there’s anything bad about the Enzo, but the styling looks a little recycled. I really like the bow-tie exhaust, though. A few more angles await after the break.

Citroen May Produce Survolt and Metropolis Concepts

Good news/bad news: Citroen is considering producing two of its most intriguing concepts in recent memory: the Survolt sports coupe and the Metropolis luxury sedan. Unfortunately, there’s no Citroen here in the U.S. But since most Americans wouldn’t be buying one anyway, the good news wins: we’ll still be able to gawk at the models if Citroen pulls the trigger. As an added bonus, I’m thinking the production Survolt will lose the pink gills.

An unrevealed source explained to Autocar: “We cannot afford to let the likes of Audi, Mercedes and BMW forge into Citroen’s heartland supermini territory without fighting back and pushing into theirs Selling large luxury cars in Europe is not easy at the moment, but I believe Citroen has a great deal more to bring to the market.” [via egmCarTech]

Citroen Survolt Concept Out on the Asphalt

Take a short sprint down memory lane, and you’ll recall all forms of sexy electric concepts back at the Geneva Motor Show. Outside of the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid, the Citroen Survolt was arguably the most interesting and sexy electric born in Geneva 2010.

The concept is currently being prepped for a run at the Le Mans Classic this weekend and Citroen has released a new teaser video. Off the showroom floor and onto the track, the Survolt puts 300 horses worth of dual electric motors to work. One of the most short, to-the-point videos you’ll see in the auto world, the teaser is seven seconds of nothing but Survolt straightlining. [via WCF]

Car or Cartoon: BMW X9 Design Study

Looking more like a design study of the next Transformers villain than of an actual car, this BMW X9 concept was brought to us by Tunisian design student Khalfi Oussama. Unfortunately, Oussama didn’t offer any information with the car, leaving us to guess at exactly what was going on in his mind when he designed it. From the pictures, it looks like the X9 has been primed for a little off-roading. I can’t say I dislike it, but from the modified kidney grille with what comes off as a moustache to the orange striped tires that look like they’re going to pop claws ala The Animal, it just looks a little cartoonish. Four-Wheeled Concert Hall: Audi Produces Concept Version of 62-Speaker Q7

You know that 19-year-old jack bag that drives around past midnight every night pumping bass from his piece of s ‘97 Honda Civic? It’s time to embarrass the hell out of him. If Audi goes through with this project, you can roll right past him in a Q7 SUV and make his trunk-mounted Kickers sound like a cheap iPod dock.

Teamed up with audio manufacturers Bang & Olufsen and Bose, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Digital Media Technology, Audi has designed a prototype audio system for the Q7 that makes use of no less than 62 speakers. Called simply the Audi Sound Concept, the system uses 52 mid-range drivers placed in a circle around the cabin, five tweeters, four woofers on the doors and a 12-inch sub in back. In addition to the speakers, three computers control the system and an amplifier in the trunk delivers the juice. That’s a lot of capability.

So how’s it sound? According to Audi, the system delivers concise, uniform audio to every seat. It is also capable of playing 32 separate track simultanesouly (sure beats your 7.1 system at home), though I don’t really know why you’d ever need or want that many tracks in a vehicle.

We don’t expect to see an actual 62-speaker system anytime soon. So for now, Civic tool wins. [via WCF]

Lamborghini Cnossus Concept Puckers Up for a Kiss

On our Tuesday tour of Mediterranean area design, we move eastward from Spain to Italy where this Lamborghini Cnossus concept was born. A thesis collaboration between two Scuola Politecnica di Design students: Russian student Victor Filipchenko and Portuguese student Nelson Simoes, the Cnossus is named after a city on Crete. The designers took some inspiration from the Lamborghini Countach and made a Lambo all their own.

I like the body of this concept, but that front end just reminds me of an old lady puckering up for a sloppy smooch. Similarly, the taillights look puckered, but I guess they wouldn’t be preparing for a kiss. The rear bumper could used to be toned down a little as well. [via Carscoop]

One-of-a-Kind 1960 Pininfarina X Concept for Sale

It’s pretty rare that you see the words “concept” and “for sale” in the same breadth. Usually, concepts wow the world for the duration of an auto show or two and then crawl back into their company garage and never mutter another word.

Imagine our delight to report, therefore, that this 1960’s Pininfarina X Concept, a retro-futuristic masterpiece with a little bullet nose and flaring rear-end, is up for sale. The concept looks a little like a streamliner mated with a circa-1950’s Cadillac, and it’s sheer awesome. It also features three wheels for an extra touch of rare coolness. Power comes from a 43-hp Fiat engine.

You can find it at Ft. Lauderdale-based ATS Collections for $3 million. Hey, you knew a 1960’s one-off concept wasn’t going to be cheap. [via Carscoop]

Racer X Design RZ Ultima Concept: Style Finally Meets Performance

The original Ultima GTR is an absolute beast in terms of speed. The car set a world record for the 0 to 100 mph to 0 run, sprinting and braking in under 10 seconds–9.4 to be exact. It’s also a bit of a beast in the looks department, unless you have an affinity for unrefined race cars. Let’s just say it’s not a pretty supercar.

If you’re eyes are leaping from picture to text wondering what I’m talking about, it’s because the picture is of a concept version of the Ultima GTR designed by Racer X Design. Positioned to bring the GTR’s looks up to snuff with its performance, Racer X’s RZ concept makes the car a supercar in every sense of the word. No longer looking like an oversized go kart, the concept keeps the chassis and mechanics of the GTR but adds a much more stylish body. After looking at the stock GTR, it’s hard to argue with what they’ve done. [via Carscoop]

Audi A9 Hybrid Design Study

It’s hard to look at this Audi A9 concept without thinking : “BMW Vision EfficientDynamics!!” Sure, perhaps the only thing that ties the two together is the white, black and Blue LED scheme, but it’s hard to imagine Audi designing a concept like this without looking like it’s ripping off BMW. The concept was designed by Daniel Garcia from Spain.

The whitewashed windshield is more than just an effect of sculpturing; it’s a purpose-built part of the design crafted from an “as-yet undiscovered nanotechnology material.” In the designer’s mind’s eye, the driver could adjust the tint of the windows to suit his needs, a useful feature that could allow you to shade from the sun. Only in the Middle East: Design Q’s Stretched-Out Range Rover

There’s something inseparably Middle Eastern about a Range Rover limousine concept. Perhaps it’s the fact that the Range Rover looks so good rolling over the sun-kissed desert sands of the Middle East, or perhaps it’s that the Middle East is the only place that would be considering a stretched Range Rover in this current economy.

In fact, the second explanation is what inspired tuner Design Q to offer this 2010 Range Rover Q-VR. To prove that the down economy hasn’t forced Dubai oil moguls to the point of giving up luxuries like Range Rover limousines, the tuner has designed this Range to feel like a private jet inside. Indeed, Design Q makes its point with all kinds of luxury items like a cigar humidor, drink cooler and mini-spa centre. The Q-VR will debut later this week at the 10th biennial Dubai International Motor Show. [via WCF]

Next-Generation Infiniti G37 to Pull Much Influence From Last Year’s Essence Concept

The Infiniti Essence Concept, which was debuted at last year’s Geneva Motor Show, was, by far, the sexiest Infiniti I’ve ever laid eyes on. Powerful but uncharacteristically smooth, the car snarled in a gruff tone, but spoke with delicate, poetic words. The bad news is that we’ll never get to see an actual Infiniti Essence on the road. The good news is the essence (sorry had to do it) of the concept will find its way into the next-generation G37 coupe, sedan and convertible.

More than just an injection of slight influence, the G37 is rumored to be receiving both mechanical and styling cues from the Essence. One of the most interesting aspects of the Essence was that it was designed as a hybrid, a set-up that will be making it over to the G37. While the displacement will get smaller, the G37 is rumored to be getting a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 engine, electric motor and li-ion batteries worth about 360 horses. If rumors hold true, it’ll also receive a variety of toned-down Essence styling like the aggressive stance and muscular wheel arches. [Autocar via MotorAuthority]

Alfa Romeo Spider Design Study From Politecnico di Milano University

I’m not sure that we’re quite ready for a new Alfa Romeo design study, after being bombarded with Alfa concepts like the Pininfarina 2uettottanta just months ago at the Geneva Motor Show. But the next generation of brilliant automotive designers must learn, so Alfa teamed up with a trio of designers from the Politecnico di Milano University to create this Spider design study. The designers are Alberto Gaiani, Massimo Paparella and Michela Zedda.

A little more linear than Pininfarina’s take on the Spider, the design is a rougher, but still pleasing alternative in my opinion. Alfa appears to be taking the idea of a new Spider seriously and looking closely at a variety of takes as to what the two-seater should look like. If it were me, I wouldn’t do much to the 2uettottanta and produce it as is, but I wouldn’t complain too loudly if they chose this concept or a combination thereof. [via Carscoop]
