Porsche Boxster Porsche Might Introduce a Three Cylinder Engine for Boxster

The pressure to cut carbon and get greener will make car companies do a lot of crazy things. Take the possibility of a three-cylinder Porsche Boxster. Yes, it will be turbocharged, but still–a three-cylinder Porsche? Are they for real?

According to a report on Autocar, they certainly are. While just under consideration at the moment, Porsche is looking at a turbocharged three for its next Boxster model with the aim of cutting emissions and appeasing EU policy makers. Emissions would enjoy a cut down to 180 g/km while horsepower would duck into the 180 to 200 hp range. This would help Porsche to meet the EU-mandated 25 percent cut by 2012 (over 2006 levels).

Unfortunately, a three-cylinder Boxster won’t make that 25 percent drop happen on its own, so we may be in store for more watered-down Porsches. Further complicating things for Porsche, it may need to cut down emissions even more now that it’s a part of the far larger VW Group. That’s not a bright sign for the future of legendary sports cars.
