Porsche 918 To Debut As a Convertible
By Chris Weiss
So far, we’ve seen two renditions of the Porsche 918: the original Spyder concept and the race-inspired RSR. Porsche will not use the newer, Detroit-debuted RSR as the basis for its production model. Outgoing design chief Wolfgang Durheimer clarified that Porsche intends to offer the 918 in Spyder form and hasn’t yet decided whether or not to build a production coupe version.
He told Autocar: “We learned from the Carrera GT that the driving pleasure of the car is enhanced when you have the possibility to drive open or closed. We have always told people interested in the 918 Spyder that it will have a roof concept similar to the Carrera GT’s, with a lightweight carbon fibre panel. A closed car is better for motorsport, though.”
As for the RSR, Porsche will use that model for competitions and hopes to get it entered sometime this year. [via Autocar]
