New BMW Art Car On the Way
By Chris Weiss
- Andy Warhol, 1979
The BMW Art Car may look like a social revolt in which the lower class rose up and splattered paint all over a just-waxed luxury car, but it’s actually a program that has been sponsored by the German automaker since 1975. BMW announced that it will commision New York artist Jeff Koons for the latest BMW art car to be unveiled later this year.
Past artists of the Art Car have included Andy Warhol, David Hockney and Frank Stella. Some of the models have found their way to museums including the Guggenheim and the Louvre.
Koons drove his first BMW over two decades ago and has been trying to earn the Art Car spot since 2003. No information on which model Koons will transform or what it will look like has yet been divulged. This will be provided in “due course”, according to BMW. Until then, enjoy some past Art Cars in the gallery below. [via WCF]
