Usually, seat warmers are a nice little creature comfort separating a nice car from a truly cushy one, but in the case of the 2010 Mazda CX-9, they’re just a hazard. Mazda will issue a recall for 12,300 2010 CX-9 models with optional heated front seats. The control circuitry for the seats has the tendency to get a little too hot–as in fire or smoke.

According to the NHTSA: “There is a possibility under extremely cold conditions for the seat heater control circuit to overheat and fail due to insufficient electrical grounding. This may cause burn damage of the seat cushion surface or a risk of smoke/fire.”

The recall is expected to begin on March 9. Dealers will repair or replace the faulty circuitry. [via Inside Line]

Yes, ALL that is needed is a small additional Earth or Ground Strap Wire Closer to the Seat Cushion itself.
No Big Deal Really, the Extra Cold North American Winter has users with seat warmers ON for far longer than intended.
The circuitry gets Hot, and could, I repeat Could, cause a fire or seat damage.
There have been 2 of 13,000 CX-9's that have had seat Damage only, No Fire.
It is good to see that Mazda as always are straight onto the issue with a FIX, unlike many other well know car makers..
Mazda are one of the best when it comes to ongoing upgrades and recalls, which average about 1.1 Recalls per model…ONLY…some have None in their production life!..

Ash is right, Mazdas are the reputable Class B… they aren't a big company like GM or some others, but they take pride in what they do and they make very reliable and sturdy vehicles. Not to mention they are much more fun to drive than a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry. Got a 2010 Mazda3s GT :D

When they say optional heated front seats, does this exclude those model with standard heated front seats from the recall?
