The eventual Lamborghini Murcielago replacement, dubbed the Jota, was recently spied doing some testing, and it appears to be coming along quite nicely. According to reports, the sleek, little bullet will feature the aluminum spaceframe chassis from the Audi R8 and will get a carbon-fiber shell, helping to bring down the Murcielago’s fighting weight.

Other departures from the Murcielago include a wider track and shorter front and rear overhangs. The Jota will keep a similar wheelbase and mid-engine layout, though.

The Jota is expected to feature a V12 engine good for somewhere around 700 horses, but will also reportedly get a variety of efficient technologies including direct injection, brake regeneration, engine start/stop and, possibly, a hybrid powertrain option.

The Jota will hit streets in 2012. [via Motor Authority]
