J.D. Power Predicts Auto Sales at One Million

Based on data gathered from 10,000 U.S. auto dealers around the country, J.D. Power and Associates is predicting that monthly auto sales will pass one million for the first time this year, coming in at 1.1 million sales for the month of August. The data gathered included sales figures for the first 13 days of the month. Cash for Clunkers is seen as the main impetus for the boosted sales and the figures have caused the reseach firm to increase their prediction for total sales for the year to 10.3 million. Retail sales to individuals showed a 2 percent increase over last August–the first such increase since June of ’07. The numbers point to healthy success for the Clunkers program, which is set to wrap up today. [via MSNBC]
