It’s not exactly a surprise at this point, but is excellent news nonetheless: Porsche has confirmed that it has given a green light to the 918 Spyder Hybrid for production. Porsche will produce the car in limited series production, but hasn’t yet indicated exactly how many examples will be built or when the production will start.

Launched as a concept at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show, the 918 is an exciting example of the possibilities of hybrid supercars. The car derives 718 hp from front-,  rear- and transmission-mounted electric motors and a 500-hp 3.4-liter V8. Porsche estimates European-cycle fuel economy of 78 mpg. Despite its more eco-friendly demeanor, the Porsche will be capable of hitting 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds, topping out right around the 200-mph mark and beating the Carrera GT at Nurburgring with a time of 7:30. So, the fact that Porsche will be producing it is kind of a good thing. [via Car and Driver]
