Guess What? Toyota Finds No Problems With James Sikes’ Prius.
By Chris Weiss
After federal investigators failed to replicate any problems with James Sikes’ Toyota, and the entire news world and blogosphere has been questioning his integrity, we really didn’t expect that Toyota would be the party to finally unveil a discernable mechanical issue. And indeed, it hasn’t.
Toyota did not find any sticking with the accelerator pedal during its investigation, but did find that the front brakes were severely worn, reportedly having been tapped lightly over 250 times. The floor mat was also found to be clear of interference and no diagnostic trouble codes showed up in the computer. The power switch worked normally and shut off the vehicle in three seconds. The shift lever also worked fine, including shifting to neutral.
Testers replaced the front brakes and they worked fine; no unintended acceleration occured even after testers purposely overheated them. Toyota’s investigation was overseen by both NHTSA regulators and a congressional staff member.
In other words, Mr. Sikes’ story is looking much less plausible now. We’re not sure what Sikes has to say about the new findings, but we’re pretty sure it involves a swift redirection to his legal counsel.
