GM to Build Motors in the U.S.
Jan 26, 2010 - By Chris Weiss
With the electric and hybrid markets heating up, GM has announced that it is preparing to design and build electric motors right here in the U S of A, saying that it will be the first major U.S. automaker to manufacturer electrics.
Tom Stephens, GM vice chairman, global product operations is quoted in a statement: “In the future, electric motors might become as important to GM as engines are now. By designing and manufacturing electric motors in-house, we can more efficiently use energy from batteries as they evolve, potentially reducing cost and weight — two significant challenges facing batteries today.”
The first GM motors are expected to find their way into GM’s fleet in 2013, debuting in several rear-wheel drive two-mode hybrids. The Chevy Tahoe hybrid is expected to be one of the first models featuring the new motors.[via Inside Line]
