Future Lamborghinis to Trade Power For Weight Decrease
Jan 26, 2010 - By Chris Weiss
There are many means to a better performing supercar. While more power is certainly the fastest way to a happy driver, it isn’t the only trick in the bag. According to a report originating in AutoWeek, development at Lamborghini will shift away from bigger engines toward lighter, more nimble bodies. The effort will help the company to cut emissions and get the Raging Bull in line with the greener world–while still giving a little something extra to demanding, performance-minded buyers.
CEO Stephan Winkelmann remarked: “It has come to the point where acceleration equals consumption. More consumption means increased CO2 emissions.”
Lamborghini is expected to replace steel with aluminum and use more composite materials “in the right place[s]“. Lamborghini will also focus shift attention onto acceleration and away from top speed.
The Murcielago LP670-4 SV comes from this new school of thought with a modest 30 hp increase and 220-lb weight cut. [AutoWeek via AutoBlog]
