Ford to Move Production for the 2011 Ford Explorer to Chicago

Ford is gearing up its Chicago factory to prepare for the 2011 Ford Explorer. The factory where Lincoln MKS and Ford Taurus models are currently produced will get $400 million worth of upgrades to prepare it for the Explorer. Production is set to begin in the fourth quarter.

The Kentucky plant where the Explorer is currently produced will be used for smaller Ford vehicles.

Next year’s Explorer will feature a variety of modifications from the current model including a shift from body-on-frame to a lighter unitized construction. The 2011 Explorer will also enjoy increased fuel efficiency thanks in part to an EcoBoost engine. The new Explorer is expected to deliver a 25 percent increase in fuel economy. Another interesting upgrade is the installation of rear-seat inflatable seat belts–an industry first. [via Inside Line and NY Times]
