2012 ford police interceptor Ford Police Interceptor Debuts, Gets EcoBoost

If you don’t wear a utility belt with a nightstick and side arm, it may be a little difficult to conjure up excitement about a new police cruiser–particularly one that eschews some of the exotic sports cars in favor of something as pedestrian and ubiquitous as a Ford Taurus. But police officers everywhere are likely to be excited for a new toy.

“Police nationawide asked for a new kind of weapon in the battle for public safety, and Ford is answering the call with a purpose-built vehicle – engineered and built in America – that’s as dynamic as it is durable,” said Mark Fields, Ford president of The Americas.

The next-generation Ford Interceptor launced today in Las Vegas. It will replace the well-known Crown Vic Interceptor. The car features two powertrain options consisting of V6 engines that “perform equal to or better than V-8 engines”. The first is a 263 hp 3.5-liter V6 that delivers a 25 percent increase in fuel efficiency over the current 4.6-liter V8. The second is a direct-injected twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 worth 365 horses. A high-capacity six-speed SelectShift Automatic™ transmission delivers those 365 horses to all wheels.

Other enhancements include larger brakes, better cooling and Blind Spot Information System.

Ford will also offer an Interceptor utility vehicle to be detailed later this year.  [via PR Newswire]
