Combining two ubiquitous safety devices into one bundle of passenger-coddling emergency protection, Ford has innovated the first inflatable seat belts. The new inflatables are designed to provide extra crash-cushioning and stability to rear passengers.

Sue Cischke, a VP at Ford, explained the added benefits: “Ford’s rear inflatable seat belt technology will enhance safety for rear-seat passengers of all ages, especially for young children who are more vulnerable in crashes.”

The new puffed-out belts will make their first appearance next year on the next Explorer and will slowly creep into other Ford models from there. Watch them hold some creepy test dummies in place after the jump. [via Carscoop]
