Ferrari’s Green 599 Hy-KERS Hybrid Concept Makes Official Entrance
By Chris Weiss
Ferrari’s much-whispered-about hybrid 599 concept is here and it comes with plenty of consonants and vowels: the 599 Hy-KERS vettura laboratorio. We already knew the basics of the hybrid system, but Ferrari has filled in some of the question marks that were left behind. Inspired by F1 technology, Ferrari mates a 100 hp electric motor mounted on the back of the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to the 599′s 6.0-liter V12. The lithium-ion battery pack is mounted beneath the floor.
The motor provides an instant boost in torque when accelerating and passing. The motor can also take over for all-electric driving under city conditions. The motor also captures power from the brakes to recharge the batteries.
According to Ferrari, the meticulous layout actually boosts performance by lowering gravity. The hybrid powertrain also cuts emissions by 35 percent (combined European cycle).
Ferrari is offering the car as a concept and potential direction for future hybrid systems. [via MotorAuthority]
