GM announced this morning that Ed Whitacre, Jr. will continue as CEO of GM, becoming a permanent fixture at the helm of the company. Whitacre has served as interim CEO since December 1 when Fritz Henderson stepped down.

Whitacre stated: “The board of directors asked if I would be willing to stay on at GM and help continue the company’s road back to success. Having spent the past few months learning the business, meeting with our employees, customers and dealers, and working with the GM leadership team, I was both honored and pleased to accept this role.”

Whitacre also used the press conference to state that GM will pay back U.S. and Canadian loans in full by June. [via AutoBlog]
