BMW Introduces Performance-Tracking IPhone App
By Chris Weiss
Is it us or did engineers forget that cars replaced horse-driven buggies? There’s really only so much tech that you need to get from your garage door to the office parking lot. I suppose, however, a little extra tech makes the ride that much more fun.
BMW offers the latest vehicular iPhone app called BMW M Power Meter, and it’s a freebie. The app uses the integrated motion sensors in the iPhone to measure your performance using such indicators as speed, forward acceleration, lateral acceleration, travel time/distance and acceleration up to a given speed (i.e. 0 to 62 mph). So you’d better take your coupe out somewhere interesting and let the inhibitions fly.

Instead of relying on the motion sensors in the iPhone, wouldn't it make more sense to use bluetooth or similar technology to have the iPhone hook into the diagnostic panel and allow for the data to be measured directly from the root?
Other than that I feel that simply having an app which does this is kind of pointless and silly.
