Audi was content to repaint the e-tron concept blazing orange for L.A., but for Detroit, it has debuted a full redesign. The new concept sits more rearward than the original, an alteration that we feel agrees with it wholeheartedly. Audi also incorporates a short wheelbase of 95.67 inches into the refashioned e-tron.

The most dramatic change comes in the dropping of the front motors of the AWD version of the e-tron. The new iteration uses only two motors, one mounted on each rear wheel. The battery pack is mounted just in front of the rear wheels.

The new design gives the vehicle a front/rear weight distribution of 40/60. Audi has also used its Space Frame technology to keep the new e-tron’s total weight down to 2,976 lbs.

The performance of the new e-Tron is down slightly from the previous version–5.9 seconds for the 0 to 62 and a 124 mph top speed. Driving range is 155 miles.

What do you think? Would you rather see the original e-tron concept or the new version when Audi begins production in 2012? [via Motor Authority]
