Despite the over-the-top Miami unveiling and the most-stupidly-ridiculous-long press release ever penned, the next- generation Audi A8 is here and it’s a rather captivating sight to behold. Destined to compete with the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series, the new flagship sedan sits behind menacing full LED eyes. Other notable features for the new A8 include the 372 hp 4.2-liter FSI V8 engine with  eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox, updated multimedia interface (MMI) with handwriting recognition feature and optional 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen stereo system. The new A8 is expected to offer a 15 percent boost in fuel economy over the outgoing version.

The A8 sits on an aluminum space frame that is longer, wider and lower than competitor sedans.

The 2011 A8 will come to the States late in 2010 with pricing info yet to come. Until then, enjoy the gallery of pics below. [via AutoBlog]

Cars in this class are typically bland and this design breaks little new ground. The hard vertical seam at the rear is distracting.

I agree. That rear bothered me in the same way. The lines flow okay and then it's an abrupt cut off at the end.

Not that big of a change from the previous model. The front lights' LED's line doesn't seem to match the design of the car…

Sorry to go against the trend but I like the look of the car. It presents as being strong, safe and reliable. All of which I look for when considering a new vehicle. “Audi” Their name is synonymous with quality and reliability. Equally it still retains a large engine yet they are working very hard to reduce consumption. This is another positive indicator.

Although these vehicles may appear bland, we know they are not. Never judge a book by its cover, is that not the saying! As history indicates this car is marketed towards the conservative buyer and will always appeal to the upper end of the market. The A8 is a good car.
It is also good to see some improvements in the fuel consumption and perhaps the future we may see an Audi production of the hybrid!
