We’ve seen plenty of spins on the ‘best’ car in recent weeks, but here’s a list that looks a little deeper and acknowledges the best under-the-hood options out there. As we might expect from the overall direction of the auto market, small, efficient engine choices dominate the 2010 Ward’s Best Engines Choices.

The list was derived from field testing of 34 different autos across 13 automakers. The field comprised all-new engines, those with significant upgrades and returning winners from last year. Factors used to judge included torque, horsepower and refinement, among others.

List-toppers include the 2.0L TFSI turbocharged DOHC I-4 from the Audi A4, 3.0L TFSI supercharged DOHC V-6 from the Audi S4, the BMW 335d’s 3.0L DOHC I-6 turbodiesel and the 2.5L DOHC I-4 hybrid courtesy of the Ford Fusion. To see the full list and accompanying details, check out Ward’s.

The awards will be presented on January 13 at the Detroit Auto Show. [via Ride Lust]
